[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 49: Classic Kpop Special

My newest episode of Getting Warmer for NTS Radio is a classic K-pop special I made with very special co-host Bread Face. It’s mostly from the 90s, with a few early aughts tracks. Until recently I had been under the (false!) impression that K-pop was mostly limited to dance-oriented bubblegum synth pop, but I’ve been loving delving into all of its sub-genres: included here are moments of hip hop, trip hop, r&b, and even some ska influences. We had so much fun putting this together (my first time bringing a guest onto NTS!), so I hope you enjoy it. If you do, you can download an mp3 version here. Thanks as always for listening 💚

[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 48

Here’s my most recent episode of Getting Warmer for NTS Radio–pleased to realize that it’s my 48th episode, meaning that this show recently turned four years old. Sharing this show has, in all sincerity, been one of the most rewarding and pleasurable things I’ve ever done, so I’m grateful to all who have listened.

As I was putting this mix together I was thinking about the million people we’ve lost to COVID-19, a fifth of whom were Americans. Many of them died alone, with no family or friends present, and many of them still haven’t yet been given funerals because of travel or safety restrictions. Here in America, there has been no national mourning, reckoning, or even acknowledgment of what we’ve lost. Our president trivializes the disease and its impacts, and he belittles and dismisses the 210,000 lives we’ve lost to it, every day. It feels incredibly difficult to move through collective grief when our leadership has not only learned nothing from its mistakes but is actively denying that mistakes were ever made or are still being made.

This is my dedication to those who’ve died and to those who loved them: music that, to me, feels otherworldly, reverent, and resonant with the gravity of loss. It’s mostly Russian choral music, which I love for its dark, watery awe, though it there are also a few moments of Japanese medieval futurism. It also includes two of my favorite choral pieces, Rachmaninoff’s “Bogoroditse Devo” from his All-Night Vigil and a choral adaptation of Bach’s “Komm Süsser Tod.” I hope you enjoy it–you can download an mp3 version here. Sending love, and thanks as always for being here 💙

[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 47: Late Summer Ambient Special

Here’s my most recent episode of Getting Warmer for NTS Radio. It’s two hours of late-summer ambient and ambient-adjacent sounds, meant to capture the hazy, humid, golden quality of August and September, featuring field recordings, sunbeams, and bugs. It’s ideal for mid-day napping. (It’s also kind of a sequel to this mix from two Augusts ago, if you’re curious!) A modified one hour version of this was broadcast live on the air last week, so this extended two hour version is a director’s cut of sorts. Thanks as always for listening and being here; I hope this can serve as a moment of quiet in what, to me, feels like a very loud time. You can download an mp3 version here.

[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 46: Summer Disco Special III

Here’s my newest episode of Getting Warmer for NTS Radio. In keeping with tradition, it’s a disco special made with summer in mind. I have a confusing relationship with joy at the moment, feeling as alienated and scared as I imagine many people do, so I can’t help but feel a little bittersweet about listening to disco: it’s the most joyful music I know of, but it reminds me so much of how badly I miss dancing with large groups of people. I miss the way living in a city used to present you really magical opportunities to commune with strangers, and the cathartic joy that only a long night of dancing to the best music in the world can provide. I miss so many things. I hope this mix brings you some form of joy, and in the meantime that we have songs to tide us over until we’re able to dance together again. You can download an mp3 version here. Thank you as always for listening!

[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 45: Gospel Special

Though I’m far from an expert, I love that gospel music can mean a lot of different things to different people, regardless of whether or not you’re religious. It’s functioned as a means of protest, solidarity, expressing joy, devotion, and as a way of sharing collective grief. Hopefully you’ll find something in it that is helpful to you right now. There’s an mp3 version you can download here if you’d like it. Sending love.

[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 42: Pipe Organ Special

My most recent episode of Getting Warmer for NTS Radio is an organ special. While I’m sure many of us are looking for music that’s relaxing, reassuring, or generally positive during this high-stress time, I should give you a heads up that this mix isn’t really any of those things. It does, however, feel like an appropriately hellish soundtrack to the apocalypse.

I recently had the pleasure of hearing the second piece in this mix, the Finale of Jean-Pierre Leguay’s Sonate I pour Orgue, performed live at Saint Thomas Church by Nicholas Capozzoli. As easy as it is to sometimes feel jaded about the possibility of total musical novelty, it was a truly life-changing experience to hear it in the acoustics of a cathedral, to feel it reverberating in my chest, to let it properly melt my face off. I didn’t know that organ music so deeply avant-garde and strange existed–it was easily the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.

I don’t think the internet needs another personal narrative about how this current global crisis is affecting somebody, but I will say that I’m grateful that my last concert experience for the foreseeable future was this one, seated next to a friend I’ve been missing recently, in a church full of strangers. I’m currently scrambling to get as much work as I can while it exists, but once that work dries up I hope to get back into blogging here, as I’d love to be able to share more music in this chaotic time. In the mean time, please enjoy this mix, which you can download an mp3 version of here. Sending love to all, everywhere.

[Mix for NTS Radio] Getting Warmer Episode 40: Early Choral Music Special III

This month for NTS Radio I put together a third volume of early Western vocal music. Completely acapella and largely sacred, though I went a little ~crazy~ this time and threw in a couple of courtly love motets. I’ve listed the performers as the artist, and then the composers in parentheses after the song title. In full transparency, I’m neither an expert on this stuff nor am I at all religious–I just really love this music, and I think it makes an ideal winter hibernation soundtrack. I hope you like it too. You can download an mp3 version here. Stay warm!
